I don't really get why people use this is a copout while they know that while less soldiers would have died, the bomb killed tons of innocents.

Because Japan started it. It's probably best we dropped the bomb when we did, we didn't know how horrible nuclear weapons really were. Imagine if we never knew and dropped a much more powerful bomb decades later. It was a hard call to make but I think Truman did the right thing.
