Some things use to be better.
As far as basement foundations go, standards have risen. Concrete is thicker and moisture barriers are installed. I've seen very few issues with foundations done to code.
Wood framed housing is the best for Canadian climates as brick and mortar, concrete, etc provides poorer access for insulation, electrical and plumbing.
Most new builds have nice siding or stucco from what I've built. Stucco usually lasts 50+ years and vinyl 20+.
