This is a meme propagated by our governments.
Out of the more than 10 000 Greek citystates spanning from Iberia and West-Africa to the shores of the Black-Sea and the Levant and Egypt, only 4 ever had democracy for even a short period of time, ever. And out of these 4, only one was a relevant city, Athens.
Athens and their system was looked down upon by every other citystate.
Our democracy is far more worse than theirs was, because of the liberalist and marxist ideas that define our present zeitgeist (e.g only citizens [free men born in Athens] could vote - so no women, no outsiders, no slaves; and the government was structured very differently).
The most important thing for the average citizen were the pottery votes. Every year, the citizens would vote for a person to be banished from Athens - with their wealth taken away by the state. Several times they banished someone and they regretted their choice. Once they called back a man from banishment because he was the only one fit to be a leader of Athens in a war.
The word ostracism (banishment from a group) comes from the greek word for the piece of pottery they used to vote.

Well Greece had a civil war right after WWII commie cave dwelling lunatics against the democrats. The commies lost and ran north to communist countries and kidnapped roughly 35k kids to train to invade Greece with.
