I've seen news reports of US citizens getting arrested for tweeting their mind. I've seen the same here, offcourse the judge doesnt in neither of the countries.

Here in NL you can smoke your weed and have 1XTC pill/0.9grams of cocaine with you whitout getting arrested.
In Germany you can drive as fast as you want on certain highways
In one of those Nordic countries you can camp anywhere in nature (even private owned) as long as you dont throw your dirty stuff there etc.

As an outsider to both dear dutchistani, I must say that it has to do with their education system and media. They are fed by how America is the greatest freest country of all and have a really smug attitude about it. When they interact with other nations here it creates the cultural conflict. I think thats also why they can't take any criticism particularly from outsider, don't you dare every criticise burgerland. They have no negatives at all, only features.
An american tried to defend their ambulance ride rates as freedom. Its really weird
I can point out some faults in NHS and a brit might agree or disagree, no one is perfectly comfortable with and outsider saying "you brits, you americans" etc. But a brit can take it like a champ while Americans cannot.
Maybe this is the "lack of banter" most people talk about. I would say ignore them, most never left their home state and think olive garden is fine dining. You are not talking to the best and the brightest of the American public here so act accordingly.

America has the highest paid athletes, the richest CEOs. The overwhelming majority of technology, video games, movies and music comes from America. What operating system does your phone or computer use?
In America you have the choice to be fat or healthy. The government doesn't force your hand. That's why there so many people in prison. Because you have the freedom to ruin your life if you're foolish enough to do so.

Having highly paid athletes and CEO's does not make me proud to be an american. I'd like to be able to camp without paying some asshole money a fee. I pay taxes for it. There are some genuine criticisms of the american perception of freedom in this thread.

I'd rather be able to own and carry my pistols on my person and be able to discharge my guns when I want, whenever I want (outside of city limits) than to be allowed to legally do drugs. Within 10 years, all drugs will be here anyway. Still won't be doing them though.
