Typically the machine guns will be stripped and the main guns of tanks made unusable to comply with weapons laws. I'm pretty sure you could just re-order parts and get it working again but I assume there are regulations/licenses around that sort of thing.
It sounds cool but it's something most people could never do, mainly not only do you need to own enough property to store them, they also aren't street legal and need to be specially transported. Add to that they need all kinds of specialized parts and maintenance to stay in working order which quickly exceeds the original purchase cost.

Don't need a FOID to buy ammo here, not 100% sure about gun buying now. Laws were changed in '15 and I purchased all my guns prior to that so i haven't kept up.
