I was a kid in the 90s so I won't comment on politics or society then but without a doubt I can say that vidya and the internet were better. There were a lot of AA games that had good funding but tried different things. This of course is in addition to the legendary blockbusters. Most of the devs were total nerds that liked what they did. For awhile freaking flight sims were a big portion of the PC market, and MMOs like Tibia and Ultima Online were brutal and satisfying compared to the stuff today.
One major fact that influenced the culture was that the computer was something that was in the corner of a room in your house, and the internet required at least a little skill if not to get online then at least to navigate. That really changed the nature of online interaction compared to now where there are people growing up online all the time and don't even own a PC they just use their phones and tablets...
Then again I bet a bunch of kids are getting nudes sent to them via Kik, Snapchat and other social networks, it's probably easier than ever to find and interact with girls from school. So maybe things are better now from the young man perspective.

My childhood was the 90s so I might be unfit to really comment but I remember adults being a lot more happy and there was a general air of optimism. People couldn't wait for what the future had in store, especially in the late 90s with the hype for the new millenium. I remember everyone being so excited for the year 2000.
To me I noticed a change when 9/11 happened and by the Iraq War all that optimism and hope had vanished and become replaced with a biting cynicism and pessimism that has kept festering until this day.

I've got a good story from the 80s. There was about 7 of us that got caught cheating on our final couple of tests in 9th grade English class. We had to pass or fail that class and be screwed for the next year. Wellwe got caught with our cheat sheets. I've never seen so many zeros entered into a teachers grade book. Remember this was before electronics. Laptops. Well, we broke a window to gain entry to her class room and stole her grade book for the entire year. She had left it on her desk and the door was locked but the rock broke the outside window so...... We grabbed that grade book and thru it in our bomb fire that night over a case of genesee cream ale beer. Went to class the next day and guess what ? She had to pass the entire class because she had no grades for the entire school year, boy was she pissed. Nothing else was takin just her score book. Great memories and great times too bad computers mucked that kinda stealth mission up in the future. Hahahahaha. She was pissed. The principal was pissed at her for screwing up all the kids that needed their exact grades for future college. Wonderful memory.
