I'm in grad school for pharmacology and have worked in academic science for over four years. Here's what's good.
I think overall I've met one scientist (M.D. PhD) who was an open lefty. She's a middle aged woman btw and she's very aggressive about her support of Hillary which is pretty unprofessional in my opinion.
Everyone else either won't talk politics or is absolutely uninterested in politics. It's best not to get into politics since hurting someone's feelings can get you into trouble with your institution.
Mostly I just think anyone who cares enough about science fields to do academia over higher paid industry is just a autism lord and could care less.
Also scientists in the private sector are still considered scientists by academics. Supposedly that wasn't always the case but shit changed and people are disillusioned with academia these days.
As far as funding goes there is very little government funding these days and an insanely saturated pool of people applying for grants. Most people are now looking for other routes of funding as either their sole source of research bux or as a supplement. And just to dispel any myths about grant money, professors can't use it to buy cars and shit, the university takes the money and puts it into a research fund and gives you your grant money only for things you put onto a purchase requisition. They also partially own anything you patent during your career at the institution

The left has science denial, but when was the last time you actually heard a democratic politician make and then double down on anti-science claims. It's really not that common. However, the right's infatuation with young earth creationism (fortunately, that's going away) and climate change denial (that's actually a pretty big problem) actually infests republican politicians.
All normally educated people who stay in school, get academic careers, go into business, will be more "american liberal" than "american conservative". The reason for this is that the school system and most higher forms of intellectual discourse has a very strong bias towards liberalism, which leads to learned liberalism. Not only are these people thinking highly of themselves, but they think highly of their opinions which are now of liberal values. In addition, it's not very profitable to be controversial, so once the status quo is liberal, you best stick to it lest you lose out on a lot of opportunities for a really terrible reason.
Media, research, and scientific documents have a very blatant skew towards liberalism, which simply helps reinforce the same skew in the next generation of alterable younguns. That is to say, this has been going on for a few generations by now, which is why there is such a significant lead towards liberalism. A lot of "normal" people don't have nearly as strong opinions of liberalism as they like to mention at times, but they simply need to fit in so that they don't become outcasts socially and economically.
You'll see that there are the same amount of conservatives from subhuman iq to genius iq, this is because conservatism is not affected by propaganda in the least. You will however see a very large spike in liberalism in the iq range above 100 but below 130. These people are smart, above average, but most of all impressionable. They are problem solvers who work within the dominant paradigm but don't question it. Same with politics. It just happens that the left currently has political hegemony, it wasn't always that way.

Go look up your top lawyers, business men, doctors and other lucrative fields. Go do the poll there. Doctors might be quite liberal though...
