Like most western military forces Canada has a lot of tail and little teeth.
The average mix of full retards to reasonable people is the same as most other western forces.
The ratio of retards is far higher in the support trades as they tend to be way less intensive that the combat arms, which is also common.
What the Canadian military does do well is force down to the lowest level tactical independence and individual leadership. Or to put it another way a Canadian combat arms soldier is going to proactively do things. This ranges from housekeeping tasks like finding food and shelter to tactical actions like picking out superior ground and exploiting opportunities.
The CF (Canadian Forces) has 3 mechanized brigades that include mounted infantry and armoured (tank) support with attached artillery and combat engineers. Each brigade is built to be a complete battlegroup in the German style of a kampfgruppe (combat group or battlegroup).
The forces are trained for all weather operations ranging from high arctic to dry desert. Only really lacking in jungle training given the total lack of jungles in Canada.
The strength of the military rests in it's NCOs and NCMs (non commissioned members) which are given far more responsibilities than most other western forces. The rank structure does a poor job reflecting the experience and seniority of the members, given that for example the US Army has more ranks of sergeant than the CF has NCM ranks in total. Private, Corporal (Master Corporal), Sergeant, Warrant Officer, (Master WO and Chief WO). Ranks in brackets are appointments not actual ranks.
The best description that most CF members would likely agree with for the CF is tenacious. In Afghanistan it was reported many times that Canadian troops were still fighting long after most of the other ISAF forces had expected the engagement to had ended with a withdraw of the Canadians. Think of the CF as a hockey player; Fast, hard hitting, likes to fight.

As for the US invasion; Remember just how much connected infrastructure the US and Canada have.
We share, pipelines, electrical grids, water ways/rivers, telecomm backbones, rail networks.
Sure the US "wins" in the end they have 10 times the population. But the cost would be very heavy. Add into the negative that Canadians can pass as US citizens and it's even more complex with the 8,000 km of boarder.
In the end Canada does a few trillion in damage and the US gets to try and sit on an hostile population 1/10th it's size.

I'm an artillery corporal and I can say for sure it would be a tough war. Both sides would see huge losses and as another anon said, nukes are off the table given our close proximity. That said, we'd definitely need first strike and to cut deep down the east coast. DC would be our Moscow 1941. If we got Obama the other states would quickly disband. This is the inherent weakness of so called "united" states. States can't really unite like provinces can and beyond that a prime minister has never been caught or captured or killed while presidents die routinely.
So yes it is possible but would require blitzkrieg type maneuvers from our marines, navy seals and royal air force.
