Personally, I built my first computer back in 1997. It was a few weeks before we got an internet connection, so I had no guide to follow. I simply looked at the motherboard manual and jammed the pieces in where they fit. It's really hard to go wrong.
The only problem I've ever had when assembling a computer was when I used some old PSU cables, when installing a new PSU. I had no idea that these weren't standardized, but are made differently by different companies, despite having the same connectors, so I ended up frying several harddrives.

Well I'm not entirely unskilled, just not very good at maths. I can do calculus, linear modelling etc, I just don't understand them. I learnt past paper & tutorial solutions and figured out how to bend those solutions to a current problem. if you can speak german, Analysis I & II by otto forster are good for people that want to get into math and start at zero (so pretty much anybody that's coming fresh to university and only had highschool math before). I don't have any recommendations for english books on that, sorry. But if you have access to a university library, they usually have a shit ton of books of this type for the freshmen, so simply picking one of the analysis books they have a few dozens of probably isn't the worst thing you could do. Or just google it. I heard khan academy isn't bad to get started either, but i don't know if thats true. There are probably free courses at edX too.
You really need dedication/discipline though. Get one of those books and work through it in a month or two.

I did this. In fact, it was required. The questions were never the same as on the old exams. That being said, I'm quite good at math, so it wasn't very hard. By talking to and observing people in my class, there seems to two ways that people learn math.
- Simply memorizing all the formulas and doing the shit over and over until you learn it mechanically.
- Actually understanding what the fuck you're doing and what all the formulas mean and what they do.
Obviously, being able to do the latter is what makes you stand out from the rest.

but the problems are the same. I think i actually mean what you describe in your first point. From the back of my head FFT was one of the things you needed for our physical chemistry II exams. There were few people that actually wrapped their head around it and understood how and why it is done this way, but after going through the FFT questions from the exams of the last decade or so a hundred times you're eventually able to get it done without actually understanding it.
