By the way, famine in the USSR was nonexistent after 1947. Stalin actually ended the cycle of perpetual famines that affected earlier Russia. They occurred because the Communist Party leaders wanted to industrialize rural countries, so they collectivized and modernized agriculture and forcibly allocated large amounts of food to cities to feed factory workers and builders.
