Why do millennials hate driving and against owning cars?

I'm 20 and many of my friends and classmates don't even have a learners permit yet. A lot of them don't even see a need to own one or learn how to drive and I've been ridiculed for having an interest in them and owning 2 shitboxes that I work on.

What gives?
>>
I have a permit but i rarely use it.
The public transport is so well developed that its often even faster then taking the car and searching for a parking spot
>>

Here in Norway we ski to work.
It's faster and healthier

you're considered a manchild if you don't have a car here once you're out of education and if you don't live and work in the centre of a city. even the dumb and stupid can drive, even though it's much more difficult to get a license here than it is in clapistan and other third world countries
>>
>>74584695
Where I live it's easier for me to take public transit than to drive to school. I don't have to deal with LA traffic and I can get a $50 bus pass that lasts 3 months instead of a $200 parking pass that doesn't even guarantee me parking at my school.
>>
Maybe they can't afford a car because they waste all their money on social justice classes
>>
>>74584695
I loved driving when I lived in WV, but now I live in California and I can't stand it. Reasons: grid, traffic.

It's a huge pain in the ass. No fun.

car culture has been stifled by

1. shit economy that doesnt allow a millennial to really own a nice car like their older gen X siblings and parents did just by working at mcdonalds over the summer, thus leaving them with mostly shit cars and public transportation

2.cars themselves getting cucked to hell and back by safety regulations, pedestrian safety laws, emissions, etc etc (which makes them more expensive, tying back into point 1)

3. auto makers trying harder to make it so people can't fix their own cars- a car from the 80's or 90's was still relatively mechanically simple. a car now is a fucking supercomputer on wheels. I think it was GM, even, that tried to by law make it illegal to tamper with the engine because it ties into the onboard computer or someshit like that.

4. the lack of focus on trade and industry means that shit like mechanics are not taught in schools at all, and boomer parents never bothered to teach it to their kids either, so millennials cant fix their cars unless they are specifically into mechanics, which disconnects them from the experience, and makes it worse with point 3.

when my brothers were my age in the 80's, they could get a car easy. my brother got a job laying carpet, and used the money to buy a Pontiac Fiero.

nowadays most jobs like that are all mexicans, and the jobs you CAN get dont pay enough to buy a new car. so you are stuck with a shitty prius, unless you want to dig and get involved with an older nice car, which requires more maintenance, which takes money you dont have and skills you dont have

Daily commute:
Bus: 10 minutes with dedicated bus lanes. Yearly pass 300€
Bicycle: 15-20 minutes with dedicated bike lanes. Cost is relevant to your bike.
Car: 30 minutes thanks to traffic jams and that is if you're lucky. Cost of the car+insurance+gas+maintenance+parking fee.

I love driving my car, but nowadays it feels more and more like a giant ripoff.

You fags forgot a YUGE one. Three words:

>CASH
>FOR
>CLUNKERS

CFC made it so a good couple hundred thousand (guesstimation) used cars were quite literally just junked and turned into scrap metal, in an ass-backward Krugman-ist attempt to artificially stimulate the "new" car manufacturing market.

Go on Youtube and look up "cash for clunkers"'; you'll see plenty of decent-looking perfectly running used cars being disabled and essentially "killed" so people would have to choose the new $18,000 Dodge Dart instead of buying an $8,000 1998 Honda Civic.

Depends on the area of murrica you are in. In heavy snow areas, rear wheel drive cars become a luxury because you can only drive them 3 months a year.
Years ago, AWD was a rarity so people made due. Now that it's ubiquitous many people opt for an SUV.

In non snow areas, anon, that's a great question and id also love to know. If I lived in a sunny area like California, I'd never buy an SUV. I'd be all over a Hellcat Challenger.
>>
>>74586225
>unskilled
Sounds like a personal problem to me.

>>74586537
You're not wrong, but I look at it from a macroeconomic POV. If there were more used cars on the market to buy (i.e.: if CFC didn't get rid of all the still-running used cars with <100k miles on the clock), there would be less incentive for the "new" "economy" vehicles to be priced at what they currently are.

The cheapest "new" car on the market right now is still twice as much as what I can pay a spic auto dealership for a used car that'll run for the next 6 years with regular maintenance.

Dude that's what Ford did when he invented the car! He saw the trolley system was more efficient, so he bought it, dismantled it, which forced everyone to buy a car instead.

For not liking Jews, he used some pretty Jewish tactics. Unless of course this is all untrue and my NY state school lied to me again.

>>74584695

With Obamacare and min wage going up in many states like CA/WA going towards 15 (its 10/hour now), should you wonder why teens and people in their early 20's have a hard time finding jobs? They can't even get into entry level jobs without previous experience.

When you can't find ways to make money, you're shit out of luck in this terrible economy and are forced to use public transportation/buses/bikes. Cars are expensive AND depreciating assets. Then there's traffic in place like LA. Then you factor in the police having the ability to pull people over and fine people HUNDREDS of dollars for simply going with the speed of traffic which is always higher than the unamerican "speed limits". Driving will become a luxury for rich people now that liberals have had that way. Ironic isn't it?
>>
>>74584695
I have a license but I haven't been driving in years. Don't like it, seems like a waste of time and energy. I'd rather let someone else do the driving and employ my time in a productive manner.
>>
Its 1988 I just bought a motorbike, I am 18, me and friends will ride all summer.

There are no cctv cameras watching our every move, we can ride above the limit and not lose our licence because of speed cameras, and so on.

Being young now must be a fucking pain in the arse
>>
>>74586911
I never said it wasn't personal. I have the choice to be unskilled. My problem is the only unskilled jobs are service now. I don't want to go to college, I don't feel the need to. I am completely comfortable being uneducated, I just want the factories and manufacturing jobs to come back.
>>
>>74586943
I haven't been around cars for about 3 years so I'm extremely off-point on my bluebook values, and I'm already too drunk to look it up

But you get my point, don't you? Why would Shekelberg Automotive charge $15,000 for their new "economy package" model when you could buy a gently-used Honda Civic that gets 35mpg for $2000?

Muscle died in the 70's with the oil crisis and emissions.

the grand sedan died in the late 00's with the economic collapse and skyrocketing gas prices.

and then ford decided that they were no longer going to have region specific models. they were going to be "one ford", and sell the same cars around the world. which means the V8 is dead, and large long cars are too, because you need to cater to Europe too. So instead, you get mid sized sedans at best, with an i4.

have you seen the new Lincoln continental? it's literally a jaguar, with a twin turbo V6.

SUV's became popular because of soccer moms believing them to be "safe" while liking their ability to carry timmy and all his friends, and all her bags when she goes shopping. And dads went with it because it was at least a truck like thing, and not as emasculating as a minivan.

but jokes on them because while the SUV's of yesteryear looked more like trucks, they sure as fuck dont now. not anymore.

I mean how did we go from this-

Anymore, if a car runs and has under 200,000 miles, and looks decently clean you will not buy it for less than $750. It'll be closer to 2-3,000.

The market is getting inflated, people are getting priced out.

Car industry will likely crash in the next decade. They're putting too many unnecessary features on the vehicles and people can't afford the extra stuff.

>Because Kids weren't taught that cars can be FUN

this is close. In ye olden days, the big, empty highways of middle america were basically one huge, tarmac playground for teenagers driving around in their $1000 pontiacs.

Now, there are more people, there are more cars, and most people live in big cities with even more people and even more cars. If you live in a city, buying a car is the opposite of fun, you just sit at the wheel and wait patiently for the traffic stream to chug along to your destination.

For most people, there isn't anywhere to just go for a drive. There are the jam-packed roads of the inner city, or the jam-packed roads of the suburbs, and either way you're constantly being monitored by speed cameras. Driving used to be a fun pastime for many, but now it's unilaterally a tedious chore.

I've pretty much come to the conclusion that mid range any sedan(read not pickups, soccer mom SUVs etc) that was built after 2000 is complete garbage.

My '94 sunbird was easily fixable and my '97 mustang is like lego in terms of how easy it is to take apart.

My mom's 2015 Kia is like a fucking capsule car from Dragon Ball. Outside of the brakes, everything needs to be done in a certified Kia™ dealership.

That was because of bad labor deals. People were being paid for jobs that were replaced by automation in a grand scale. GM had excellent sales, but couldn't beat their own costs.

As of now they have good sales, but the average customer is paying for a longer term and the inflation of the dollar is making the vehicles too expensive.

Purchasing power for a new vehicle is down.

GM has paid off its debt. That "crash" was just financial mismanagement on the part of the manufacturer-and sales were NOT the issue.

This next time, sales will be the issue

Must be god tier in non overpopulated areas, but riding a bicycle here, especially in la, is a death sentence. My friend who has ridden a bicycle forever has already got into a few major accidents.

I love driving, but when it's too over populated, I hate it. And like I said, there are guys who drive for uber and lyft who will take you anywhere for dirt cheap, in brand new cars, like Idiots I might add.

Basically, shitty economy. Like it has been mentioned, it worked out well for them, but not us. I mean I was born in the early 80s, and I really do not hate millennials, because they are in way over their heads with this. Cant make shit, cant save shit to buy a decent car, so they just use uber. Like I said, it worked out well for them, they are making millions off of uber sitting on their ass, having people drive their new cars for crap wages and not have to pay taxes on it.

As someone who has lived here for over 30 years, revolt is coming anon, I can smell it. You can kick a dog only so much before they lunge at you. I'm not going to do it, I have a strong code against it, but the millennials will eventually.

The thing is this: you can get rid of those plastics (less than 15 bolts in total in most of the cases) but underneeth the engine bay looks as if they threw the parts randomly inside. Well the upside is that your engine is still gonna get more air, which in hotter climates can be crucial

Insurance is damn expensive, and costs of running a car are considerable. I mean, if I would be ordinary pole I couldn't afford a car I'm now driving (would have to save for a long time), not with the salaries in this country, luckily I don't earn my money in this country, so I can afford to have a relatively nice used car. Car is mostly pure consumption, it's value depreciates, maintenance has to be done, fuel is not free, it's expensive thing. It sure gives you limited freedom, so it's fine by that. If I would try to get same car in my Home country I couldn't afford to run not with insane road tax and even more insane insurace fees for person in my age, mind you car is registered and insured by me, not my parents, usually only option to get insurance, at reasonable price.
>Pic related car model I have. Even same color.

i fucking hate driving because of traffic

>in a giant metal box surrounded by other giant metal boxes going 60 mph with the potential for injury or death

>having to pay insurance so in case you don't die in an accident, you don't go broke fixing your car or getting a new one

>cars cause horrible urban planning (see most US cities, but Houston in particular), you need them to get anywhere since the big car companies used to always lobby against public transport

>getting stuck in traffic or having to deal with road construction

it just sucks, i can't wait for self-driving cars

that being said, i don't mind driving that much when it's 2AM and no one else is on the road.

This one, car in large city is mostly a waste, if you have to go often outside city to some little village car is good thing to have, but not entirely necessary.
I made a terrible mistake today and used my car to get myself to a meeting, for which I had to wear a suit so I took a car to avoid getting myself dirty. Was stuck in traffic jam and came late, luckily the other guy had same situation. In city best form of commuting is bicycle.

>In city best form of commuting is bicycle.
It's good but too weather dependent.

But recently they've installed public bikes in my city they had a very positive reception.
I've already hada few situations where I used the newly installed public bike instead of a bus because It was quicker.

Goat shit truly, but the system has to mature a bit.
It's so popular we have a shortage of bikes between 8 and 16 already.

the fastest I did with my old Mercedes is 242kph (150mph). There are many people who routinely drive over 190mph.

>>
>>74595406
Yeah, that's why I usually commute, when there is good weather with a bicycle, if it rains or snows etc. , I use my car. It sometimes takes bit longer than taking public transport, but you can park right next to your place. Also you don't get wet if you have good clothes etc.

>comparing german driving to american driving

we don't have an autobahn, we have poorly planned intersections full of bumper to bumper traffic

i wasn't implying 60mph was SOOO FAST, i was implying any collision at that level or higher is a death sentence

>There are many people who routinely drive over 190mph.

i think you're overestimating considering the fastest street legal car in the world goes 258mph and at that point it risks its tires blowing out if it had enough gas to sustain that speed
>>
>>74591981
>Well the upside is that your engine is still gonna get more air, which in hotter climates can be crucial
i work on a test track in a hot ass desert

that particular lexus will blow up if its over 96 degrees outside and the hood/plastic isnt secured properly

no seriously, the cars onboard computer reminds you every time you start it

>people that take their vehicles to mechanics or dealerships to replace a tire or their brakes is just totally baffling to me.

mfw this basically sums up the type of people who think cars are interesting or are a technology worth perpetuating/continuing: i.e. people who want their lives to be complicated and think working on a giant, dirty, ugly machine is something anyone would be interested in doing.

I can't wait to pay Uber a flat fee every month for unlimited rides and just give up my fucking car. I have a brand new whip, total per month including insurance is $400. I leased it, if I were to buy it I'd be liable for repairs/maintenance only to sell it in 6+ years and have it be worth nothing anyway. I see people driving cars worth 5x mine and wonder wtf they're thinking, zero chance their car will be worth anything in 3-5 years once automated vehicles have collapsed the entire market.

Why? The grocery store delivers. The internet sells absolutely everything -- cheaper than brick and mortar. There's nowhere worth going. Same shit absolutely everywhere. Ooh, I'll take a little detour and go into the next town over to see the illustrious... other Kohls, Walmart and Regal cinema. If you want to travel to or within a city, public transportation is preferable. The only exceptions I can think of are for outdoorsy people who need to get to the middle of nowhere before they even begin hiking or hunting. But how many young people are honestly into that? They'd rather strap on a VR screen. And who can blame them. The barrier to entry is lower.

Do you live in a shitty postcode? I got my first car a couple months ago a 1.6 hyundai coupe, no parents or anyone on the insurance to pull it down and I'm still only paying £700 a year insurance. After I have 1 year no claims, I'll get it even lower.

Why should I bother learning how to drive when successful self-driving technologies have already been demonstrated?

I can just wait a few years and pick up a self-driving box instead.

To be quite honest, a fleet of self-driving cars, not owned by anyone, would be better. Like a taxi network, but without the drivers.

>any collision at that level or higher is a death sentence

Not really. Modern cars are really safe. 60mph crash will probably give you scare, unless it's a side collision. I had a mate, who busted a tire at 90mph, the fucker hit a pole that cut his Boxter in two halves and flew into a field. Ended up with a bruise on his arm.

I don't really remember when I last heard about a fatal high-speed car crash last time. Every time I hear someone die on autobahn it's some idiot foreign trucker switching lanes without looking.

>i think you're overestimating

Any AMG/M-series/Audi RS car is designed to go 315kmh (196mph). Look it up on youtube, there are plenty 0-315 acceleration videos.

They probably don't want to buy a 20 year old junker. I bought a 2011 Chevy Cruze with 20k for 7 thousand and I absolutely love it. It's nothing fancy but it does everything I'll ever need it to do.

Good cars are everywhere, it's a buyer's market.

driving is semi-enjoyable when there's not traffic, which for most people there is both to and from work

i own a modest new car so it's not a money thing, but even without traffic i'd rather walk or bike if my city were set up for it. it's exercise, you physically feel better day-to-day.

this, also parking places and prices.
I work in the city center and it's impossible to find a place, If I had to pay for parking and for gas it will be much more expensive than public transport and many times the time it takes will be the same or even faster.

I am turning 26 in 2 weeks and buying my first car - I've had a license for 4 years.

Currently I cycle to work and it takes 15 minutes for 3.5 miles, but moving 19 miles from my office cause the rent is cheaper.

When I checked my insurance back when I first got my license it was something like £4000 for a £4000 1.2 litre car.

Now I ran through some quotes and it is £400, even with no no claims bonus.

I will still take a train to work (13 minute train vs 35 minute drive), but use the car to fly 60 miles to my girlfriends house for mid-week booty calls.

neither Millennial nor Gen Z is set in stone. And probably wont be until at least a generation from now when experts make up their damn minds.

some sources consider Gen Z to be early 90's, others mid-late 90's.

Personally, i would say early-mid 90's marks a Gen Zer. there's too much difference between those born in the late 80's and early 90's, and those born after that.

Same here in Britain

Few people my age are driving

However I feel it's down to the cost.

My car with insurance and fuel is costing me ££22 a day... To get a taxi to and from work is £8 so I'd technically be better off. But I like the freedom. The speed. And the car

they don't 'hate' cars. millenials make less than the previous generations and can't fucking afford them.

they don't 'hate' houses either. it's the same shit. they can only afford to rent.

some millenials might say they hate them but this is mostly a fox and the grapes situation
