Marx formalized it with a new way of looking at economics that was completely hostile to capitalism and private enterprise though. It probably wasn't necessary. All that people really needed was worker protection and decent public services.

Open your eyes, they would have just turned to religion, Enlightenment values, or straight up demanded land without any ideological backing. In ancient Greece, workers would often revolt and demand food/land/power - did they have Marx, let alone organized parties or ideologies?
