OP-
With the collapse of the USSR the Chechens wanted independence like the other republics who broke away. Unlike the other republics however, the constitution of the USSR did not allow this for Chechnya.
So they fought for it, but was outnumbered (though they did well against a badly disorganized post soviet army).
An Iron fist leader Ramzan Kadyrov was put in place as a puppet under Putin. The Chechens have and are paying a heavy price.
The Chechen move for independence was also hijacked by wahabi muslims, a strict form of islam that opposes Chechen salafi islam. So now you have that problem.
Personal opinion: apart from having to vent their frustrations against the Russians for what Stalin did to them, the Chechens made a grave mistake. Is independence really worth the destruction of a whole culture?
