I didn't give a shit. Was a straight-A student for one year, but otherwise I usually skipped doing my work. By my junior year of high school I was skipping school entirely and getting Fs.
But I was still considered a pretty smart kid because the work I did do was high quality.
I was not the smartest, but I think I did well: had 3.9 GPA (which should be lower since all of my A's were low ones), 29 on ACT, and had 2 B's and the rest A's. Definitely top 20% though.

Meh, my school had a ridiculous grading scale (98% for an A, 95% for A-) but I still managed to get A's an B's, with a C+ or so. I got a nice ACT score, so I was pretty set. It's hard to summarize but basically the reason I did so well leading up to college is because I had the tools to put in almost no effort but still succeed in the primary school education system. I could process information very quickly, understand concepts easily, and had a lot of early reading so I was probably ahead of a lot of classmates in a lot of ways.
But I just didn't know how to do longer-term work. Paper writing was a mighty struggle and there was a research paper in my junior year of HS that I almost didn't do because I just had no idea how to approach it. Been in therapy for a couple years as well as on stimulants and have slowly learned a lot of things I should've learned earlier but didn't because I didn't need them.

By Junior year, there was dissonance between the me who still gave a fuck and the me who couldn't care less. I guess the former won the battle because I still managed a B average I think

No. I hated doing homework so I bombed a lot of classes. Had a bad video game habit. Started smoking weed in high school which made me give less shits.
I've had enough teachers gush over me to be certain that I'm not a retard, though. I've had dozens of the serious, sit-down, "you're selling yourself short, get your fucking shit together" lectures. I always did really well with speeches, papers and presentations. I don't think I had ever gotten less than a B on one of those. I always went above and beyond for speeches especially because I hate listening to boring speeches. I would try to add as much off-the-cuff as I could.

I wasn't straight A but I tested higher then anyone.
I had teachers and test examiners look at me with absolute disbelief and on multiple occasions they talked to me personally and would comment on how unusual it was.
I never studied for anything. I did do school work but I really didn't care back then because of mental health issues. Now I got them fixed and realize it doesn't matter that much. Thinking of going back to school and becoming a robotic engineer.

I was also a division 1 athlete in college. Also, the only one of all my friends who was conservative. It threw a lot of people for a loop when they found that one out

It was a rollercoaster. I've accepted that even though I'm naturally very intelligent, I find it really hard to be motivated sometimes. When I do though, I almost always excel.

I used to have this opinion of myself. Everyone always came to me for questions, I effortlessly made As, did people's homework for fun, that sort of thing. Then I entered a pretty elite private school and realized I'm not hot shit, and just a small fish in an enormous pond of smart, talented individuals.
A on everything except math, didn't really learn for it, took to long to learn. I just didn't gave a fuck on math the whole time. Made it through finals, i had a fucking F in maths, because i didn't even know what the weird letters meant, kek. Everything else A
