Not every male deserves a family. It is something you have to earn. Widespread polygamy would cause tension and it is either a problem you have to address or accept. Monogamy was the solution but times have changed and society is a hell of a lot less violent and willing to kill over women so allowing polygamy will have less consequences than it did before.
