I used to be a Christian, and I was very serious about religion. My grandfather is a pastor. Everyone in my family is some form of a Christian. I accepted Jesus when I was 4, but I never felt anything. I didn't even know you were supposed to feel something. I just accepted whatever was told to me as immutable fact, like someone telling you about gravity or one plus one equaling two. It wasn't until I got to school and found out certain truths could be proven did I start to feel shaky in my faith about God.
On a few occasions as a child, I donated most of the money I had, just like the widow in the parable. I thought I would feel happy because I was following God's will. I didn't even tell anyone I donated. I waited til everyone was gone and put in the x amount of dollars I saved up from odd jobs I did for my mom. It always left me unfulfilled. It never mattered what cause I donated to, I never felt happy about what I did or even good about it, just ashamed that I wanted my money back. This was true for most contributions I made to a church. Just a vague feeling of shame that I resented whatever tasks I felt compelled to do by my church.
Every time I've talked to someone about God, I've never received any fulfilling answers. I couldn't ever figure out what compelled people to believe. It always amounted to something people just felt. Since I never felt anything, and I haven't found any compelling evidence for the Christian God to exist, I'm an atheist. I guess if there is a God he just doesn't want me.
