I'm a single guy. I have a simple life style and I make enough money to sustain it. I like my current role. I also know people at that level, and I know how hard they work. They are there when I show up in the morning and there when I leave in the evening. I thought about all these things, then turned down the promotion. Why would I work more hours, doing something I don't like, to get more money I don't need?
If I had a wife and kids... I'd feel an obligation to take that promotion. Got to make more. Got to keep the wife happy. Got to keep the kids happy.
It seems miserable, having to force yourself to give up the stuff you like doing, to work harder, and longer, all to provide for other people. A woman who could leave you at the drop of a hat.
My impression is, in the 60's, and before, a wife was more of "your woman." She was a person who would handle the domestic stuff, cook, clean, raise the kids, while you handled the financial stuff. I can see the strength of that kind of relationship.

I heard a similar story that was even more sad and actually true.
A man had a wife and child and a drinking problem. He couldn't stop drinking, so his wife threatened to leave him. She did, and got custody of the kid.
The man kept drinking and the kid grew up without her dad. Years pass. He ended up dying young from liver problems and whatnot from all his drinking. The girl is now an adult woman and when she opened up her father's wallet the first thing she saw was a picture of her as a baby, with her mom, and her dad in a picture right there in the wallet. He had kept the picture there through all the years.
The way it was written was really sad, truth be told I almost started crying at the story. Maybe I did, can't remember.
