Actually, it's a mix of R&D costs, subsidies, and quality control regulation, and the fact that hospitals aren't allowed to turn down broke, uninsured people.
The cost won't go down unless we leave the sickly poor to die, stop leading the world in medical advancements, let those who make the medical supplies go out of business, and then decrease the requirements of being able to practice medicine in the USA - which'll cause more cases of medical malpractice, which we already have enough of.
