Japan and South Korea are our way into the far East, same as Israel being our way into the Middle East. They're strategic pieces of our global empire.
As much shit as I can say about my country, it's definitely the successor to the Roman Empire. We export more culture than any nation, our economy isn't rivaled, our politics are discussed across the globe, and our military is the largest most expensive thing the world has seen.
Plus, military dogs have to stand around somewhere when there aren't any wars being fought. Japan would be a great place to get stationed. Pretty hard from what I hear though.
