It would be easier to dig in where the green peninsula narrows and bomb anything that tries to get to the end of the peninsula. That area is only 5km wide (I know the boundaries are not as perfect in the map but it makes talking about it simpler) and has a river intersecting it so its a perfect kill zone. Then once the end of the peninsula is low on supplies and reinforcements make a push to destroy what is now essentially a pocket. Though they probably won't do this as they have to commit man power on so many fronts it would not make sense until they start clearing out the Damascus pockets.

It's not the newest Igla, but SA-18. so quite a bit older than a decade.
This has nothing to do with the quality of the pilot as the missile is too fast for them to react (I mean they could have had a different flight plan but I guess they didn't expect to be in ATGM danger in this region, wherever that is, which is a failure of the intelligence corps and the airforce planning officers and analysts)
The helicopter did not react in any way, this suggests that their avionics are pretty shitty if it indeed failed to detect the coming missile like it appears (or it was turned off/malfunctioned?).
The helicopter is pretty old, but these things (should) get updated. Not sure what avionic package is in use of the Turkish Cobra's or when's the last time it was updated.

From what I read. The Turkish AH-1Ws have received minimal updates since they were first procured (back in the 90's if not earlier). The Turkish brass decided to replace all older attack helos with the T-129. The T-129s are equipped with active and passive ECMs too.
It seems like only the US Army and VKS are the ones putting ECMs on all their helos and not just attack choppers. I doubt the Turkish Military is mounting adequate countermeasures on all their helicopters.

As for the topography... there are too many factors unknown to me to make a good analysis, there are some things that benefit the AA crew and others the Helicopter crew. depends on where is the line of engagement, if there is one, how many routs do the helicopters have between the hills and so on.
