College professors badmouth him because they're butthurt - in reality there actually were Soviet-funded communist sympathizers all over. Same way they cry about the Rosenbergs, who were stone cold guilty.
Also, all but one of the nuclear spies were Jewish.

The whole thing about commies in Hollywood was an attempt by the studios to break the power of the unions. I'm sure there were a few sympathizers or worse in the mix, but as a whole it was a ploy for power and money.
