Napoleon's target wasn't Moscow. It was the Russian army. The Austrians gave up Vienna twice and didn't come to terms until Napoleon smashed their army. At Austerlitz in 1805 and at Wagram in 1809.

In retrospect, no. The soviet union collapsed peacefully. However, at the time it was probably the best decision. Wipe them out before they develop their own nuclear weapons. The world almost entered nuclear war half a dozen times and it was only through sheer luck that it didn't.
America could have been the first country to truly establish a world empire as they were the only ones with access to the weapons for a few years. A wasted opportunity really.
