The mandatory classes are social studies (history, geography, poli sci mixed into one), gym, a foreign language usually German/Spanish/Italian/French, a Math, a Science, a semester of Health, and then you have some options. This varies by state but this was basically how it looked in New York which is considered one of the better states for education in the US.
The mandatory classes have different levels ranging from remedial to regular to Honors to Advanced Placement. You can move between them if your grades are good or bad enough to warrant a move and with your teacher's recommendation.
AP classes are fairly common and are sometimes combined with Honors classes to be the same thing. They're harder and faster paced but if you want to go to a good college you basically have to be in one, unless you plan on going to a 2 year transfer college and transferring to a better college when you graduate there.
The quality of the classes really depends on funding. I was lucky enough to go to one of the best ranked public high schools in the country and we had classes like AP Physics, Organic Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Java Programming, AP Calculus, and even a bridge program to the local community college for students to earn college credits in things like Differential Equations and intro engineering courses.

He suddenly had no free time and since I was divorcing I suddenly had a lot of free time. I'm 20 and I have 2 children. When I found out my first born was going to be a son, all of my female friends told me to abort it because of something stupid like "patriarchy" and what not. I thought they were just misguided.
I'm pregnant with a second son and when one of them found out, they said "See? you should've gotten rid of the first one, you're contributing to the female struggle by having male babies." It was freaky and since I've browsed /pol/ I realize this attitude is only growing in popularity.

If you can find some cousins or key members of the family you could get a long with, I'd do that. Get to know your neighbors. American society these days is very isolationist, people can live next to their neighbors for years and not know even their names.
