I think alot of the russian success was due to the fact that they attacked from the rear surounding the ukrainian forces and I will maintain the position that the reason why novoazov fell was because the forces garrisoned there lacked proper anti armor weaponry.
debalteve was obviously going to fall for it was already surrounded on 3 sides after minsk 1. one need only to look at a map of the front to say that it had no hope. the fact that ukrainian forces held out as long as they did was a testement in and of itself though I think the forces should have had made a tactical retreat earlier, so that they would not have had to leave behind gear.

I'd argue that the reason that Russian forces were able to completely overwhelm the Ukrainian forces in the push to the Azov Sea was because Russian tactics and equipment was vastly superior and far more refined. For example, Russian forces attacked often at night because they had night fighting capabilities while the Ukrainians did not. Russian losses (note not rebel losses) were only around 15 confirmed compared to Ukrainian losses also demonstrate that very clearly.
Debaltsevo was arguably a failure to Novorossiya and Ukraine. Only winners there were the Russian tankers who came in at the end of the battle. The Ukrainian government left its men to die there while the rebels were woefully unprepared. I've been looking through what sources I amassed. I can see that Novoazovsk was being shelled from Ukrainian sources. But I can't see anything saying that Novoazovsk was seized until after the main Russian strike force came down from the North and took it.

I'm not doubting the report. I was being critical of the documentary about the 95th Raid. I just can't find anything from the rebels saying they held Novoazovsk when the Ukrainians were saying there was a situation there. It is really stupid for the Russian Military, which is supposedly not involved with the conflict, to take a town and hold it by themselves before the rest of the rebels get there. So that is why I believe the town was being shelled by Russia. The Russian strike force covered that territory quite quickly so it is possible that they were getting close to Novoazovsk from the North too.

I doubt the russian army traversed that much land that fast. and the operation had no pretenses the ukrainian army was close to cutting off donetsk from supplies and russia had to act. it was in russia interest to be swift, because if the operation dragged out a political debacle was likely to ensue.

The Russian operation was very swift and very well conducted. The primary reason for this is so there wouldn't be any concrete evidence of involvement. And they did a good job of hiding their tracks too. Funnily enough, they had to do it so fast that the only force capable of doing that would be the Russian Military. Like there was an interview with a Ukrainian tank commander I can't find right now who said that his tanks were easily destroyed by a enemy using far superior equipment in the period of several minutes. Only tank capable of overpowering T-64BMs like that is the T-90 itself. Also, given how disorganized the Ukrainian forces are, it wouldn't be hard for a well organized and a well equipped fighting force to roll over the Ukrainians like that and that has happened countless times before in history like the 1991 Gulf War. It definitely came as a shock to Ukraine because they were used to fighting a buch of ragtag rebels and they never expected to find themselves fighting an organized and prepared foe.
