If you can grow a beard as fine as the one in OP's post, then grow it, because you would undoubtedly look more alpha in it. Otherwise, if it's patchy as shit, keep it down to at least stubble if not cleanshaven. I, for instance, look best after 2-3 days after a cleanshave so I actually use a beard trimmer and just cut it down to 1mm every few days. That's what looks best on me.
