I grew up wondering why MS got a bad rap and then I left the Jackson metro area when I got my drivers license and figured out why. I grew up in a small town near the Oregon coast. It was a nice place, but aging. Also, the mega-quake will wipe out a lot of places along the coast itself, though my town was too elevated and inland to be at tsunami risk.
I didn't even realize until I moved away for college that many places weren't actually "communities" at all; they were just agglomerations of subtly-hostile groups in geographic proximity. It was a big shift.

I came out to Lafayette, Indiana a few years ago for school and fell in love with it. 100,000 is just about the perfect population for a town: not too big, but big enough that anything you need is readily available. And you don't have to drive far at all before you're into wonderful open farmland.

I moved to Tillamook Oregon about 3 years ago in order to work with fisheries sciences, best decision ever. Total small town feel with a really cool little niche thing too in the cheese factory, really great.
I hate liberals and hippies, but, this is way more rural than you'd think of Oregon. I live up the mountain off of the Wilson River, it's great. We have salmon/steelhead in the river all 4 seasons and I have got an elk all 3 years I've been here, love it.
That smalltown USA is still out there, you just have to find it.

The beaches and bays are to die too, I love going out on a low tide and clamming/crabbing. You get a strong ebb tide and you can wade out to the middle of the bay and fill up a 5 gallon bucket with Dungeoness Crab in about 10 minutes. The halibut season opened up a little bit ago, you can get a plate of halibut and some fries for 12 bucks, fuckin insane compared to what we paid on the east side.

I live in houston and well itsnice but i used to work in pearland texas (just south of houston) i always preferred that area while it is growing fast it is fairly comfy. The area past it i believe humble texas was always very nice and prestine. But its essentially an hour away from downtown houston with medium traffic. So i couldnt live there.
I actually dont want to live in houston anymore, in a smaller town. Maybe between 75,000-150,000. I do want things to be readily avalible like commercial commodities like clothing and car part just of the top of my head. But i also want a stable economy there where every other person is bum fuck poor. I want to stay in texas too and i want there to be a body of water nearby. Gult coast is probably a unavalible for what i want.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming and McCall, Idaho are absolutely beautiful and nice towns, they are my favorite small towns to go on vacation. McCall is nice because it's right next to a big beautiful lake and is innawoods, and Jackson Hole is especially nice because of the Grand Tetons and other surrounding mountains. Another place, Lamoille, NV is georgeous too, my #3 spot, go and hike the Ruby Mountains and explore Lamoille Canyon, absolutely gorgeous all around.

If you don't mind living in a town of just a few thousand, give or take, then I'd say go for it. It would tend to be boring tough to some people as there isn't much to do in those towns other than outdoor activities and bars. Last time I was at McCall all they had were small shops, a bowling alley, some bars and hotels/motels. I don't know much of what's in Jackson Hole, I go there and hike, go to my room and sleep then do the same the next few days, so I never quite noticed what was there except for fast food joints and restaurants. They are also both a distance from any medium to large city, so that might be a negative to some. Another thing that would be bad about them is there probably isn't much of a variety of jobs, and they might not have many jobs available.

If you apply for a job with the federal government at usajobs.com and look for some nature shit out there, they give all types of veterans bonus points. Not to mention WDFW and ODFW always have jobs, if you really want to do it, I'd apply for jobs as technicians and learn from the ground up.
You'd basically get dispatched to some place like Neah Bay WA or elsewhere and have to cut up fish and take measurements on them. You'd learn the fish and how they are caught in the process and then be able to matriculate as long as you're not developmentally disabled. Yeah Bristol Bay is chill, you might even be able to get a job on a tender. There are fishing boats that actually go out and drop nets and fish them (it's a gill net fishery) and then there are huge tenders that transport the fish to the processor (the tenders are usually the boats that fish crab, so you could potentially learn a crab boat and it's make up while you're in the protective environment of the bay)
It's a really cool experience and a fun fishery, Sockeye Salmon is one of my favorite fish to eat.

I enjoyed the town for some things and hated it for others. The drugs and how some of the kids were treated out there were tough for me to see, because, I'd have to deal with it sometimes. There was this little girl breaking down in my office over her brother who was just all pilled up and he was tearing their family apart because he kept robbing them and selling their shit and it was making her parents fight, she was like 11, rough shit.

The most beautiful small town feel you could ever have, nestled in the Appalachian mountains. Heres a picture of downtown. It might not have all the conveniences of a city, or even a big town. But its home, and its beautiful. Its quiet, and most folks know each other. The blacks are amicable if surly and keep to their own, as do we. We have a few asians just enough to run the occasional Chinese take out place and they're nice enough.

Its a shame a lot of the eastern parts of the state have lost their accents, and their identity. I tell you this, Portsmouth VA scared the ever loving shit out of me.
