This is actually a pretty strange phenomenon that occurs with liberals and the average normie. I would reckon that the idea that these minorities are half the fucking population derives from disproportionate representation in media. People tend to imagine things like:

>blacks make up 1/2 of the US population
>1 out of every 10 people are transgender

If and when you ever get a chance, ask your normie friends/coworkers/parents what percentage of the population is LGBT or (minority of choice).
