Heinlein does use satire, but I think you misunderstood the text. ST is a scathing criticism of leftist politics and culture by demonstrating it's exact opposite.
Joe Haldeman's Forever War is a much better book, especially of you enjoy humor.

I was always curious how the class system worked in ST. At least in the film, it appeared Rico's parents were rich and civilians and were trying to get him into Harvard. It sounded impressive given the situation. How much weight could a well educated civilian play in a society that puts service at the forefront?
