I've been working in retail selling firearms for the past year and a half now, and I even work with people that are not gun friendly. The best way I've been able to get them to understand the importance of firearms is to compare it to using a hammer or other tools, cars work too.
Do you know how to use a hammer/power drill? No, but they are pretty useful tools to know how to use right?
Same with firearms, at bare minimum you should at least be informed on safe handling of firearms and know their uses. It doesn't hurt to know more skills/be informed.
