I was born in 94 and probably my first video game system was a green Gameboy Pocket (black and white) and Blue version. My brother got a red Gameboy and Red version. We played the shit out of Pokemon, watched the anime, and loved the Pokemon: The First Movie and 2000.
I know it is degenerate, but recently I bought a 3DS just to play Alpha Sapphire. I have always been a Gen 3 and below guy, especially Gen 1, but Gen 6 corrected a lot of the mistakes of 4 and 5.

People always have preferences. There's literally 700+ Pokémon, probably hitting 800+ by the end of this year, so obviously people gravitate towards certain types.
Some people only like the really monstrous ones. Some people only like ones based explicitly on animals. No biggie, there's enough variety for everyone to pick and choose what they like.
