In the near future we will be able to create near perfect simulations of real life which will satisfy all of our senses and wishes. It will be near to- or even better than reality itself. This can be activated via implants in your brain that will initiate the program with you as it's God.
You will be able to live out your fantasies as if they were truly happening. Do you want to be king? Do you want to experience a war? Do you have weird sexual preferences that are illegal? All of this and much much more can be simulated into a computer generated program within your own mind, to such a detailed scenario that you will feel, hear, see, sense and taste it as if it was completely real. Better than a lucid dream, better than real life?
With this system in place we could help people transition to their death, people in coma to survive the aftermath shock of waking up or even the close relatives of said people to overcome their loss. We could rehabilitate rapists and murderers or prohibit them from doing actual harm. We could finally give people what they want and/or deserve and thusly help them cope with reality and fiction. We could help those in depression overcome their suicidal thoughts, by giving them what they desire. We could help all society's outcasts with this opportunity.
This can be done through a supercomputer which is linked to microchips implemented in your brain. These will then activate (when ever you want them to) and then you'll be "plugged in". Your body will be taken care of as these microchips also will make sure that your basic body functions (such as eating and drinking and walking) will remain active and disconnected from your consciousness. Your body will be in "auto mode" as you're away liberating your country and saving the princess.

I think we have become more hedonistic lately. At least here in Sweden, we worship the lie and the "idyll" or ... Dream. Rather than the cold hard truth. This might be a large contributing factor to our current situation. We spend a lot of money on Experiences rather than useful things or material objects.
Maybe this is the next step in that pursuit?
