It's impossible (or at least rather difficult) for all businesses to collude in wage manipulation, but with a minimum wage, they don't need to, they know exactly what their competition is going to pay, and they can and will pay accordingly.
I'm not sure it's a theory I agree with, but I understand their line of thinking on the matter and they certainly make a better case for their argument than the Fight For 15 crowd does.
Illegal immigration does a few things. Unskilled or low skilled labor faces greater competition to sell their skills and time on the market, which is really all a "job" is. You exchanging your time and labor in exchange for money and perhaps other benefits like medical coverage or a 401k. The more people you're forced to compete against, the lower wages are kept as employers aren't required to raise wages of their own accord to entice more employees. This has a deleterious effect on wages upward. Or, to put it another way, are your wages more affected by the pay of the CEO, or the pay of the lowest paid citizens? Unless you are your own boss, or a middle management type, youre wages are almost certainly, in an indirect way, indexed to the minimum wage.
These are people who are already clinging to the lowest rung of the economic ladder, and are the easiest harmed by the current system of virtually unchecked immigration. An illegal (obviously with aid of a criminal employer) will undercut wages by working illegally, usually evading income taxes and the other expenses that the employee is forced to pay (FICA, Social Security, unemployment insurance), by law. Low wages, kept low by illegal immigration harm the social mobility of the poor (such as it is) to advance their skill set or knowledge (IE at a technical school or college).
