Based on the fact that ancient egyptian as we know it is a part of the afroasiatic language family, and the civilization's geographical location, wouldn't it be safe to assume that ancient egyptians were either semites or berbers/libyans?
So why do some people think that they were black?

This is just propaganda to to give black kids a reason to be proud oftheir ancient heritage, since most of them don't even know who their fathers are. They were neither, their language is so different from the others that it's a separate branch in the Afroasiatic family tree. This isn't any evidence for their race, since languages often spread without spread of genes - in fact, the original speakers of Afroasiatic languages seem to be black hunter-gatherers.
