The DREs can do what amounts to a a field sobriety test, and if they think you're high they can arrest you for whatever your jurisdictions version of DUI is. I see too many of these videos where licensed drivers refuse to comply with the terms of the license that they agreed to. If you never sought a license or registration, and you drive an "automobile," not a "vehicle," and you have done your research, the law is on your side. The problem is the state and their enforcement agents do not always know or enforce these laws which are superior to the commercial codes under which we all live.
There is no law that says the citizen can't voluntarily relinquish his or her rights. That's exactly what we do when we sign up for a driver's license. End of story.
Tl;dr - The cop has a gun, and the power of the State to back him up. You're just a citizen. Treat the cops nice, drive the speed limit, and frequently check the operation of all your signal and marker lights. Do this and they will leave you alone.

Well it depends on the situation anon. It's quite possible in some of these cases the police were partially or even wholly justified in their actions - I have seen some where that was my assessment. But typically they are on a fishing expedition, without any real cause to detain the person in the first place. When that's the case, and the citizen politely declines to comply, they are really supposed to just move on.
IF they have specific reason to be doing it, it gets a lot tricker. That's why that's one of the key questions that gets repeated a lot - do you have reason to suspect I have committed a crime?
