Like all other religions, Islam has its secular wing and its fundamentalist wing. Like all other religions, the secular wing isn't the problem. The fundamentalist wing is.
Fundamentalists in all religions take their religion seriously. It is easy for them to believe that God is literally talking to them, and telling them to do all kinds of stupid and destructive things. The voice of God shouting into one ear drowns out the voice of reason and common sense whispering into the other ear.
The problem with Islam isn't "radical Islam". The problem is actually fundamentalist Islam.
