The way we taught history in this country changed a long time ago (60s, I'd wager).
We used to teach the national myth of Britain, but that has long since disappeared, to quote Peter Hitchens: "In an incredibly short time, we have been turned into a nation without heroes, without pride in our past or knowledge of either our past triumphs or our past follies and disasters. We are like an amnesia patient, waking up in the hospital ward, with both past and future great blank spaces stretching behind and before us, doomed to repeat mistakes we do not even know we have already made."

I can understand the principle behind modern history teaching. They try and focus on the details of what life was like in a particular area, and weighing one source against another, rather than dictating a series of events. The problem is this approach separated a whole generation from the story of their ancestors, and without a story you don't have a people.

I think this is because former British colonies are desperate to create a new identity for themselves, so often they idolise the natives, so that they don't have to base their identity on Britain.
But obviously this is completely unsuccessful, most people are not descended from the natives, and most can easily realise that they are NOT the founders of the civilisation they are living in.
These desperate attempts to cut themselves from the mother-country result in the cultural cringe.
Canada's changing of their flag was an attempt to do this. I think what would actually instill a sense of patriotism in these countries is if they embraced the aspect of being "Britannia's sons", thus incorporating the history of individual liberties hat Britain has into their own.
