Most successful movies start franchises. Toy story for instance could have been 2 movies tops. Hollywood likes to pump that "mommy, daddy...I NEED THAT TOY REEE33!!!" well until it's dried up.
There was no need for a Monsters Inc 2, but it happened. There was no need for a cars 2, or any of the Shrek sequels, but they happened. They know people will continue to see them regardless of the quality.
Disney bought Star Wars for that exact reason, it's an endless story where anything can happen. Infinity sequels that people will see just because.
