Gaining access to someone's e-mail account can happen through a myriad of ways, some including not even typing a single thing on a computer but through coaxing the right people into giving you access. Some times all it takes is someone at the right place with a CD and a marker pen.
I don't know the specifics of the Clinton incident, things like who was the e-mail provider, and what exactly he got access to. Because if he got access to the server where her mail was stored, then he'd have access to everyone elses mail as well.
So my guess is that he got hold of her password somehow, which is the most common way.
We have a pretty long tradition of fucking with the US's shit.
