It's a ploy. Look at the language of the quote, he's hoping to guilt Trump out of building the wall. Look at the way he patronizingly speaks about forgiveness and convincing Trump to "think intelligently".

Could be the case, but the beauty of it Is its win/win either way.
1 the president actually sees that Trump is a man who gets things done and isn't bluffing yet is friendly to those who offer him proper respect (ie Putin) so he's gonna bow and scrape, making Trump's influence and projected power rise all the greater or
B) they fear him enough now to risk an assassination/kidnap attemp, which would fail laughably in the face of our SS, and then unite the people of the US even more behind Trump since the dirty beaners proved him right, like he's been proven right already so many times on the campaign trail. Hell this would be so effective if Trump had the integrity of someone like Hillary he would stage such an event, but of course he's better than that and is smart enough to know it could get traced back.
