He's implying that America has become more progressive and marxist that a communist candidate actually has a chance of winning, instead of being immediately branded as a traitor (rightfully so).
It's basically a nod towards that speech from Russian KGB agent Yuri Bezmenov, who spoke about how America's youth was being indoctrinated by communist ideologies within the country, all the while we thought we were "winning" against the USSR.
