In America "liberal" means "progressive".
Social progressives don't realize that even if they don't support every bit of the social justice movement, they are giving it legitimacy and are working with them, even if they don't take it to the extreme.
Liberals want to combat institutional oppression. SJWs do this by excessive language policing, so you can't oppress anyone by using such harmful words as "dumb" or "slut" or not using gender-neutral pronouns. Those are all things that can hurt someone's feelings and enforce "harmful" social standards, so what liberals do is "liberate" the demographics affected by those words from those social standards by banning those words or making them socially unacceptable. Also you can't make fun of fat people because that's institutional oppression as well. Ultimately even if you disagree with the ways they go about it, you'll still have to submit to them because they're working toward the same greater goal of liberating people from the social expectations that those words enforce.
Liberals want to "equalize" everything, SJWs do this by forcing equality of outcome, by making up statistics, lying and indoctrinating people, suppressing free speech, revising history, and even if you disagree with those tactics, they're still working toward the same goal, so you'll have to forgive and forget because they're on your side.
SJWism is just the future of American Liberalism. So you need to join a movement that's focused on countering their influence, or you will end up being lumped with them or becoming like them sooner or later
I understand though, a lot of liberals have valid concerns like wealth redistribution, climate change, or they support equal treatment without being authoritarian about it.
