About 1/3 of the city actually went north.
That big huge area up there has enormous camps (complete with kitchens and supplies) that house thousands of temporary workers every day. The oil sands projects are so massive they're basically miniature cities - they have their own police (security), ambulances, fire services, helipads, kitchens, etc etc.

Just nature being nature. Forest fires are a yearly occurrence up here, but they don't usually happen anywhere near a town. Except 5 years ago - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Slave_Lake_wildfire

But nature's also being a crazy bitch because it's a full 15 degrees warmer than it's supposed to be, and we haven't had a good rain so far this year. It's crazy dry (see pic), and just windy enough to feed a good fire.

It's just so surreal that people have been reporting 7 hours to get from downtown to outside the city because back when I used to live in Fort McMurray 6 years ago, it took 5 minutes tops.

If climate change were real, we'd all be responsible for causing it with our first-world lifestyles, and bear in mind that it's your side that wants more immigration to increase the population and accordingly increase Canada's "carbon footprint". I'd be quite content to put an indefinite moratorium on all immigration, let our population decline naturally and give our environment some much-needed breathing space.

Riiiiiiiiiiiight

Do you even know the difference between Afghanistan and Iraq?

Iraq is the one in the shitter producing jihadis, Afghanistan is just dealing with the political upstarts of the Taliban, with some radical elements.

Being in bed with Obama, preaching that we were helping in Libya/Syria, is what really fucked us. The cons did it low key, the Liberals are almost proud of what they've done.

First rule of evacuations if you have an animal you give a shit about: don't leave it.

Never.

Never, ever, ever.

You took responsibility for the creature's life. The very least you could do is kill it quickly instead of having it drown or be slow roasted in a locked home.

Never leave your pets. And if you can't take them, you probably shouldn't have them in the first place.

As of 10 a.m. the out-of-control wildfire was between 7,500 and 10,000 hectares in size. Officials said it has resisted all suppression efforts and Wednesday’s weather could cause explosive conditions.
>>
>>72978219
Well, its roughly 50% chance that a woman would cause, so I don't see how the fire being caused by a woman would be surprising, just as it would be equally unsurprising if it was caused by a man.

Oh please. Responsible pet owners find that out ahead of time and make accommodations.

>b-but poorfag can't get hotel spent it all on animiru

If you have a car, you can live in that with your animal. It's a HELL of a lot better than in a shelter.

>b-but they'll make noise all night and not like it and I can't sleep and/or shitpost bwaaaaaah

Ever seen a charred animal? Heard one scream as they die, or screamed for help trying to get out? See Katrina rescue.

>inb4 potential gore thread

You know if that's what it takes to wake these lazy fucks up to the fact that they should either take care of their animals or give them to people who will, so be it.

So.. Is the fire going to stop? Is it still raging/heading towards more buildings and such?
>>
>>72982611
>How's the course and how's the job?
The course (one day of fire suppression/fire entrapment avoidance, and a second day for pump ops course) is really easy....you get taught the baseline but you dont really learn until you get on the fireline. Its like reading about sex before actually having the sex.

The job itself can either be rewarding or pure hell (if you cant breathe the smoke, take the heat or the bugs or the minimum 12 hour shifts, or dont like patrolling 15km a day, or livving in a tent, or in hotels or firecamps and living out of a bag for 3 months)

I personally think the satisfaction outweighs the suck, YMMV
