I have no idea how insurance will work in that city either.

The houses would be worth $140,000-$200,000 in most other parts of canada, but in that city you could renovate a shitty little house for 6 bedrooms and it is worth $600,000 and then rent each room for crazy money. THis is after oil collapsed.

Insurance companies don't care about lost rental revenue and all they see is a shitty little house, so some of these owners will get fucked.

What a stupid talking point. We've taken in refugees for decades. If you go around spewing retarded rhetoric like that, you're just going to look like a ridiculous ghoul, and your only accomplishment will be to taint the concept of questioning what logistics are truly acceptable when fulfilling UN obligations. There are actually multiple wildfires raging i nwestern caanda at the moment, this is the only one we hear about because it hit a city.

Pic related is the view from space showing the fires.

The fire season started much earlier this year due to the record shattering warm winter and lack of snow cover up north. Northern Saskatchewan had a heat wave this spring which didn't help. Instead of the usual 5-7 degree Celsius they hit 25C in some areas.

Completely wrong. Take into account the heat of the fire, the elevation changes and the speed and direction of wind, and ESPECIALLY the type of fuel. Had this been any other day rather than the day after the Republican Party went full Nationalist Socialist, every network would be covering this 24/7. This is like a 9/11 level happening on Canadian news networks right now.

The damage in dollars is expected to be in the Katrina range. Really stop to consider how much that is, considering the size of the city.

To make this clear to any new lurkers seeing my post wondering what is going on, the entire city is expected lost at this point. It is even hotter and drier today in Northern Alberta than it was yesterday. The fire is only getting bigger.

I repeat, a wildfire in Northern Alberta is completely and totally flattening a city of over 80,000 people.

If the fire did reach the tar sands I wonder what it would look like.
>>
>>72959009
I believe it's a fire retardant
>>
>>72959689
That was in Mayerthorpe, that's a couple hundred miles away from Fort Mac.
>>
>>72959009
The retardant is an odd mixture of various chemicals (makes a great fertilizer, as an aside), and it is a vibrant red (well, more pink now) so that it is more visible from the air. It's much heavier than water, and is designed to be dropped ahead of the fire, so as to "retard" its progress, giving ground crews more time to get line up around it. It's not used directly on the fire, like most folk think.

We used to have a direct attack product we just called Gel, and it worked wonders - one S2T tanker could see a fire starting, bust a nut on it directly, and literally put the thing out - no need for dozers, water tenders, or anything more than one truck to mop up. It saved a ton of time and money (and lives), and typical modus operandi at our base was one tanker with gel and one with retardant, to throw a line around the whole area (just in case).
Problem was, the EPA got seven shades of hindpained about it, since the coloring might (and I stress might, it was conjecture) have affected one specific breed of trout or salmon, should it reach rivers and streams. So they canned the whole product.

God bless California, where good ideas that save human lives are thrown away because one specific breed of fish are more important.

Probably giving some Saudi or Kuwaiti OPEC oil Prince a celebratory blow-job in his Quebec office as Oil Prices inch upwards especially when the fires spread north and ignite the entire Oil Sands Extraction and Refining infrastructure. Trust me the Saudi's at OPEC are watching this very carefully and whacking-off in rapt joy right about now

There were no lightning (or any storms yet for that mnatter) so this was definately man made.

The 2011 slave lake fire was the previous reecord holder as Alberta's msot destructive fire, and it too was deliberately set.

Usually it is the Native American Indians, either through negligence or deliberately set.

Funny fire story, I was on the Okanogan fire last year in Northern Washington and a retardant drop hit a bear and made it very angry so we were all told to keep an eye on this "retarded bear" and the next day we cross this ridge and there he is... the retarded bear hes covered in red shit and it's fucking hilarious and all of us fire fighters just didnt care about the angry retarded bear at all because we had our tools and for some reason were confident that we could rape that bears shit with hand tools, though we had some chainsaws too.

Retardant drops have led to some very entertaining moments, especially since all out pilots are crotchety old fucks who like dicking with people.

>Butte fire last year, MidCal
>Hectic day, 30k gallons dropped
>End of the day, cleaning up, see truck driving down the road to the base
>Captains truck
>Pink truck
>Pink truck with cracked windshield, no side mirror and missing a headlight
>Slews to a halt near the main building, angry man gets out
>Pink man
>Hear lots of yelling
>Pink man returns to vehicle, drives away angrily
>Free ice cream the next day, courtesy of a pilot

Turns out one of pilots (whose name shall not be given, to protect the guilty/entertained) might have misjudged his approach a bit and nailed the Captain's truck on the highway, as well as the brush to the side.

It was funny, but direct retardant drops can fucking kill you (1200 gallons of heavy liquid + air speed +height), so the pilot wrote up a nice apology - a copy of that apology sits on the wall, framed, next to a photo of the poor bastards truck.

No, that how insurance works.

Fort Mac houses are expensive due to the land being expensive, not that they are super wonderful houses. If the house burns down the Insurance will pay to replace it.

Much like say, DC were houses are stupid expensive, were a house that worth 150k in most places goes for 800k. If that house burns down you get the 100k to rebuild, and once you rebuild it, it worth 800k since the land is worth 700k
>>
>>72961727
Face away? Huh. I remember them telling us (and the other folks in the class) to face towards the drop, otherwise you run the risk of liquid running along the ground and up into your nostrils, providing a rather unpleasant drowning death on land.

Then again, having retardant dropped on your dome wouldn't be good either. I think the best idea is to just hope it doesn't happen, as it's going to suck either way.

Occasional fires are good, in fact in most forests, are a necessity. I doesn't totally rule out really big ones you get in really dry years, but even those are smaller if you do controlled burns.

Did you know that in the US, preventing forest fires was less of an ecological and financial need, and more of a early justification for the existence of the US forest service? Look up the big burn of 1910. The US forest service was in danger of being defended by the Taft administration, but the forest service used the fire fighting justification for continuing funding after the big burn.

The house I live in is a lot more modernized than the pic I posted, but it's the same general house structure. It's so tiny that I have to hunch down when I'm on the second floor. I can stand in the widest room in my house, spread out my arms and touch both sides of the room while my head touches the ceiling. I feel like I live in a hobbit hole but it's still comfy.

Internet's pretty shit at times but I have the conveniences of the electric kike and I never have to deal with progressive bullshit out here. The city, st johns is only 5 hours away and the few times I go there it's pretty comfy but I've noticed a lot more shitskins out there the past few months. they never leave the city though so I never have to put up with liberal bullshit out here.
