In fact, some plant species have an adaptation known as pyriscence, which means they only release seeds after a fire. These plants are very common in Boreal forests- which this area is. It also serves to clear out noxious/invasive species which usually do not repopulate after a fire.
However, this is moot nowadays. The problem is forests were managed awfully for such a long time, that most fires nowadays will be massive, since there is an unnatural excess of fuel in both forest understories and canopies, causing every fire to potentially be a massive one.

Yeah. The rate of burns is generally higher in nature than managed burns are, plus we tend to limit unmanaged burns to smaller areas that they'd naturally consume.
This of course leads to plenty of places with huge amounts of ready-to-burn material and eventually, very difficult to control fires like this one.
Post-burn forests are neat to see, though. It's amazing how fast Yellowstone's burn areas have been regenerating in some places, even if in others you're driving by and it's entire hills worth of standing burnt trees already surrounded with ground cover.
Horrible as it is for the town, it's going to be amazing to watch over the next decade seeing the recovery of the forested areas that are getting fire-cleared right now.
