He always talked in a politician speech voice, even in one on one conversations. He would have immensely improved his chances if he spoke casually when not doing an artful speech.
Talked around questions and answered with campaign rhetoric and platitudes in interviews. This made him look especially stupid late in the race when he had no justification for staying in and could no longer bullshit around criticism.
Bad campaign game. Failed at tapping into voters and relied on delegates which would just piss people off and blow up the party if he won. Stupid desperate look-at-me female VP pick when he had no chance of winning.
He lost the South

Even romney was easily able to get almost all of the conservative vote without being a staunch conservative, and it was nowhere close to winning him the presidency. Ted Cruz was like the First Foundation in Isaac Asimov's Foundation series. His team was very mathematical, lawlerly, and precise. They used data mining to target voters, and adjust their message based on that data.. He was kind of dorky, and quoted Star Wars.

He had to doctor up a US birth certificate at the last second because his mother wasn't old enough when she had him to extend her own citizenship to him. She had to be an adult (18)citizen living in US for 6 years, I think, for him to be legitimate. Since she was 20? when she had him he wouldn't count as a natural born citizen unless he was born in the US.
