I was actually in a similar situation once in middle BC area, which routinely gets forest fires. We were driving up in the middle of the night ( I was a kid ) when basically this forest fire came around the mountain. On both sides of the road ( one side dropping down hundreds of feet to the Fraser River ) there was nothing but black shapes and fire. The image of hell on earth will always be stuck in my mind. It was in a strange way too phenomenal to be scary.
