The primary is entirely a Democrat/Republican thing and has nothing to do with the actual general election. Primaries are held so the party can get an idea of which candidate is the best to nominate as their party representative for the presidential election.
Democrats and Republicans technically don't have listen to the popular vote and can nominate whoever they want as a private political party, in theory.
The delegate system essentially a baby electoral college for the presidential primary since we are a republic after all. Popular vote sways who the delegates will throw their hat in with but allocation of delegates depends entirely on party rules. Democrats for example, hand out all delegates proportionally so even if you lose a state, you'll still get Delegates. Which is why Bernie Sanders has stayed in the race so long.
Republicans do things differently but it varies by state. Some states have a winner take all clause that hands ALL of the state delegates to the winner of the popular vote if they get over 50% of the vote, otherwise, they also hand them out proportionally.
