Because freedom of speech means no matter how fucking bad someone's words may be against you or a group, so long as it doesn't translate into action (ie death threats, yelling fire in a movie theater) you are allowed to do so.
Burning a flag is the most ironic form of protest because you are destroying the symbol of the country that gives and PROTECTS your right to do so. To burn the American flag is just being edgy and degenerate.
