The "narrative" during the Stonewall riots was basically: "We're American men just like you, we just want the same kind of safety American men enjoy, etc."
In that regard they were successful, I guess, because back then there were still politicians left who actually cared about Americans (or Europeans, Germans, Austrians, etc.)
Today that wouldn't work because the elites are anti-nativist and telling them that they you're also an American/German men will just make them hate you as yet another privileged white man...
