In a classical family, everyone has to contributes a fair share, the man provides resources while the wife provides her sexuality to him. Hippy lifestyle leads to destruction of classical family structure, which leads to less children or children growing up in a damaged way, cause it is a known fact that everyone needs a male and a female role model.

Hippies started as weed smokers and acid droppers. Everything was fine as long they got their allowance.
Then they started to use cocaine, meth and heroine. They become hookers and outlaw MC gangs.
A unified hippy ideology did not exist. Hippies, really, did not exist. Because of this, it's easy to project all positive ideals onto 60s counterculture and believe that it's the One True Way.
A "free love", "free culture", or "free software" movement could happen today, but I don't think there's any way of judging success unless you define the socioeconomic goals of such a movement.

also, the 60s saw the first widespread availability of birth control pills, and herpes and AIDs were unheard of then, so casual sex had few downsides, or so it seemed. the problem was that women realized that screwing around freely, while encouraged by their male friends, led to nobody wanting to marry them, kids or not.
and that is partly why cool hippy chicks turned into the first wave of feminists, who really weren't that bad compared to today's version.

Sort of. Hearing about "all those Hippies" caused a lot of people to "become Hippies" and feed into the media cycle about it. I'd say the majority of people who build the structures and tools of counterculture never had Hippie or Beatnik applied to them, but certainly knew about it as a label. The hippies really played into a media construction that was meant to delegitimize them and counterculture as a whole.

I think Hunter S Thompson described it best in that the actual movement got hijacked by a bunch of kids who only wanted to get high.
The creativeness of the Beat Generation and the freedom loveliness of bikers/original hippies got supplanted.

If you're looking for the hippy culture look into the Rainbow Family. They have regional and national gatherings/festivals all over the country throughout the year, the regionals get a few hundred to a thousand hippies and the National gathering in July gets up to 15,000. I try and go to the national gathering every year
